That'll give you enough clout to handle stuff for a while, and paying back the loan isn't to bad - especially if you can luck into a couple Bandit Hideout quests. If you start as an impoverished noble, you have a default two acres of land in the starting city, which you can sell, which can combine with a loan (5,000 gold for 2 weeks) to let you hit up a tavern and hire on a good sized (15-20) force of tier 5-6 mercenaries.

There's a few ways to get through the hump and enough XP and resources to get your hands on a decent army. I'd hate them if it wasn't for the fact that you can capture and recruit them to your own army, and that I just looted a masterwork imperial armor (!) off of one of them in my last fight.Ĭlick to expand. The very early game can be nasty, yes (looters get replaced earlier, and most of the Floris bandits are nastier than their Native equivilents). Well, alright, Black Khergit Horsemen make some desert bandits a real pain in the ass. The only problem bandits really give me is when a dozen or three bands gang up into a huge marauding horde out of hell, bringing hundreds or thousands of bandits into any one fight, but those are easy enough to evade. Now, of course charging a dozen bandits of any kind on your lonesome would be a bit daft. My current character is around level 20, I think, with 20 tier 4 archers, 20 tier 4 footmen (with a couple of tier 5 mixed in) and 10 painstakingly trained Slaver Chiefs (WAR ELEPHANTS FOR THE WIN!) and I've taken on bandit armies twice the size of mine without any casualties.

I do know Floris brings all the bandits closer to the threat level of sea raiders in the base game, but IME it's nowhere near that big a deal, it just makes them roughly about equal to most second tier troops.

Click to expand.I have not experienced anything like that at all, nor seen a proliferation of high-tier troops in bandit armies (aside from the very occasional band of deserters and small numbers of Black Khergit Horsemen among desert bandits), and I always play with the expanded troop trees, too.
